Interdisciplinary Careers: DEI + Product Management

LinkedIn published its annual Jobs on the Rise list in the U.S., featuring the 25 fastest-growing job titles over the past five years.

This list provides insight into what’s next and the opportunities on the horizon.

What if we push this further? What if we explore interdisciplinary opportunities by combining jobs on the list?

Let’s look at Diversity and Inclusion Manager + Technical Product Manager

Here are some interdisciplinary opportunities with this combination:

Build products for everyone
Products have limited reach when built with one type of user in mind. To build for everyone, include everyone in the build.

Embody the diversity in product management
Product management is enhanced when teams have different backgrounds, ideas and approaches. Put this in practice.

Recognize and remove bias
A diverse perspective can help identify biases that are built into the algorithm. Diversify user acceptance testing.

Break down barriers to tech
Create opportunities and promote representation so people see others who look like them in product spaces.

What are some other benefits of combining DEI + Product Management? I would love to hear below!

How to transition into a new role

“What suggestions do you have for me since I’m new?”

This is a common question.

Being new can be overwhelming.

Where do you start?

Especially when you don’t know what you don’t know?

It helps to have a clear path to fast-track the transition into a new role.

Here’s what I’ve seen work and the guidance I’ve provided as a mentor:

👉🏾 Learn about the new work environment – Gather information and be open

👉🏾 Learn about your new role – What will you be expected to do?

👉🏾 Make connections – Set up chats to meet your new colleagues

👉🏾 Expand your network – Ask them to connect you to others

👉🏾 Offer to help – Learn new skills that can be applied forward

👉🏾 Get organized – Take notes and use tools to manage your time

What would you add to this list to help a newcomer succeed? I would love to know below!

My Mentors paved the way for me

My mentors paved the way for me.

They saw something in me and made an investment.

They didn’t have to do this.

They chose to.

I’m grateful because of the huge impact on my life.

But I can’t pay them back.

Instead, I try to pay it forward with my own mentees.

Here are tactical things mentors did for me that I try to do for others:

✅️ Made time to listen and provide feedback.
✅️ Helped create a plan to tackle goals.
✅️ Shared resources so I didn’t start from scratch.
✅️ Explained the “why,” gave me options for “how,” and challenged me to decide what’s best.
✅️ Made connections so I could build my own network.
✅️ Taught me things they stumbled to learn themselves.
✅️ Provided inspiration and encouragement.
✅️ Shared my contributions when I wasn’t in the room.
✅️ Celebrated my wins and coached me after failures.
